Snow Day

Last Friday I had one of those lessons were things just don’t click. Those are just the worst for me. Even though I know we accomplished things, I don’t feel like we did. I can’t really even tell you exactly what we worked on in the lessons because everything has kind of melded together as one big frustrating blobs. What I do remember working on is figuring out when the inside hind is stepping and how to influence that. Hard. Hard. Hard. I practiced feeling it today but I’m still not sure I totally get it. We also worked on fixing the rhythm with my seat instead of my hands. Also hard! Why did I get to the hard stuff? Why can’t Dandy just be push button?

But you know, it’s good. Because Dandy is green and needs to learn these things I’m being pushed and I am learning. It’s just hard.

So I decided to take a break from all things horses yesterday and took a little vacation down to wine country. That was fun! Although I was still a bit sick so I ended up liking just about every thing we tried. My favorite of the day though was a dessert wine from Cooper Vineyards called Dolchi. It is divine. I maybe talked Eric into buying a full case of it. I think I’m set with desert wine for a while!

After picking up all our club shipments and adding a few more bottles, we came home with just shy of four cases! Our wine racks are once again full, or they would be if I wasn’t in the midst of packing them all up.

And then today I woke up and it was snowing big fluffy flakes. I have been waiting for a day like this to go take pictures at the barn. So I rustled up the boy, leashed up the dog and we were out there as fast as I could get us. Even though the big flakes had lessened when we got there, we still got some great pictures! Below are just a sampling of the fun we had.

  1. Great pictures! I’ve pretty much decided I’m never going to get snow pictures with Simon, but am hoping to get some good blue bonnet pictures this year.

  2. Love love love!!! Oooh, i wish i had an Eric for horse pics!! You guys look amazing…i am so excited for you. Maybe i can jog your memory w the inside hind stuff!! what i do is vizualize the gait in my head like a horse going in one of those picture-books where you see the side view of the horse’s gaits…then i match that to the sound of the gait of the horse- then just think to use my driving aids when the inside hind is going forward in my mind) hes pretty good at responding to leg just squeeze hard in your pulses!! Also, if you are using your driving leg correctly, you can also just depend on your proper driving leg rhythm to influence the horses’ inside hind, in a bilateral, or unilateral way:)Remember proper driving leg, left-right at walk, at sitting phase of trot, and right after/before first and last beat of canter (In the ‘air’) these will all ensure you are moving the inside hind:D:D:D So just make sure you’re using proper driving leg, THEN, apply and start to notice the FEEL you can also experiment and use IMPROPER leg and notice the difference that may help!! LOVE you guys ill give you an update soon, things are still changing but im ALMOST there….LOL xo Leah
