Well, on the plus side, Dandy is looking better. Yes, he’s still ribby but his neck, shoulders and butt are filling out very nicely. He is also muscling up nicely from being in full training.
Dandy’s new feeding regiment is as follows:
– free choice hay or grass
– 18 lbs (!) of Strategy split into two feedings a day
– working his way up to 4 lbs of Amplify a day
– Smartpak: Fat-Cat and Smart-Gut pellets
– Nutra-Flax (it’s making him look so healthy and shiny!)
If this doesn’t get him up to weight… well, I’m out of ideas.
In other news, Dandy met his new trimmer last Wednesday. His name is Tony and he rehabs OTTBs and events them. How cool is that? He also said we can bring Dandy up and school his cross country course any time.
Tony thought Dandy’s feet were in really good shape for a thoroughbred. Apparently he has great concavity and should have no problem being barefoot for the rest of his life!
It’s easiest to see the new growth in the top of this foot. Dandy is growing a nice tight hoof now and Tony says that, eventually, Dandy’s feet are going to look really nice but for the next few weeks they’re going to look very very ugly.
We’ve got to watch for Thrush in this foot. Always easier to prevent than to cure.
Tony said these are growing out well and shouldn’t bother him once it gets all the way down. I may have to put his boots on for a few weeks but it’ll be gone before I know it.
Got to watch the scratches on these feet. Especially now that he found out the best place to wallow is in the stream.
I am so happy that Leslie recommended Tony. He’s so knowledgeable and very good at explaining everything he is doing. I’m really looking forward to having him work with Dandy.
