Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

It was like Wednesday never happened. Dandy was an angel. Well, as much of an angel as I was going to get with an ottb. But he didn’t even threaten, he didn’t even think of going up. I think that’s what makes me so angry and freaked out about what happened on Wednesday, it’s just not like him to do that for no reason.

Anyway, we lunged in the Vienna reins in the indoor shortly before I put his saddle on. I thought for sure that if anything was going to set him off, it would be those. Especially as we haven’t worked in them in a few months. But no, not even a snort when the horse in the stall attached to the long side of the arena started freaking out. So I got on and we ran through the Eventing BN Test A for the first time. He was great and gave me a pretty darn nice stretchy free walk. Good boy.

When I had decided that he was being good inside we walked down to the outdoor where all my problems had started the other day. He was a little looky and hesitant to walk down the road but once I told him that he HAD to go forward we had no issue. And he came back to me and focused when I asked. We walked, trotted and cantered both directions without an issue at all.

“Whut?”

Guess I shouldn’t be annoyed, as this is how I want him to act. Still, it’d be nice to know what had caused his little episode. My best guess is that I had taken him out right as he had been given his hay. Of course, I don’t count this an excuse for his behavior but it is my best guest. That or how busy it was at the barn during that time.

Thank you so much for all your support. I really appreciated every comment.

ETA: I need to get a rain sheet (or a rainproof turnout with no fill) and a fly sheet for Dandy this summer but I can only afford one at the moment. Does anyone have any opinion on which I should get first? I do have a light weight fill blanket that is water proof but I’m worried about him getting too hot. Any advice? Or recommendations?
