2015 The Event at Rebecca Farm – Stadium

The problem with eventing is that if you aren’t the lowest score after dressage there is absolutely nothing you can do to improve your score. You can help your chances of moving up by going clear on XC and stadium but the only way you actually move up is if someone else makes a mistake. And wishing for someone else to make a mistake kind of goes against the spirit of eventers.

Or at least we pretend it does. If I’m going to be honest, I’m never that upset when rails fall for people in front of us. I’m sure most of you aren’t either. We do all want to win, right? I’m not saying I root for it, but if one knocks I usually think simultaneously “That sucks but we moved up a spot!”

But watching the scores come in for the Sr. Open Training divisions at Rebecca Farm, I changed from hoping for Dandy to move up a spot or two (he was in fourth with a 27.5, only 2.5 away from the leader) and just praying that he could hold on to his spot at all. Rails were flying right and left. And while reports have told me it didn’t look like a hard course, there were only clean rides in all four Sr. Open Training divisions.

6!!!!!

Out of 75 riders attempting the course. That’s 8%. In Sr. Open Training C not one person went clean.

Now, I’m sure there are lots of things that contribute to this: amateur riders who aren’t prepared, horses who aren’t fit enough, horses being moved up for the first time, just shit bad luck. But I have never seen so many people with one rail down in a class, let alone multiple rails. It was a massacre.

But Dandy went clean. And thanks to the wonderful Alanna over at Pony Express, we can all see why!

So I kind of think that, this time, Dandy really earned that first place.

There will be at least one more post about The Event at Rebecca Farm but I’m not sure if it will be next week or the week after. Stay tuned!

And THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to Alanna for the photos. It is so appreciated. I love and miss my Dandy Lion so much

  1. Whenever you post pictures of him jumping it just amazes me how much clearance he has over those fences. You could stick a couple more poles under him and he would still be fine!

    1. No kidding! He’s gone up to 4’6 in a chute but unfortunately I don’t have video proof because the kid had the button wrong and was pausing during the jumps and videoing the ground during set up.

  2. I’m one of those people who always seems to have a rail or two down! 😛 Although I can’t imagine it makes a big difference to anyone since I never have a spectacular dressage score haha!
